Memory care: Building a safe and spacious memory care community

by Yorkshire Village

If you’re looking for a senior living community for an aging family member, it’s easy to become overwhelmed. There are so many factors to consider when it comes to finding an appropriate choice – location, atmosphere, amenities, and cost are just a few that come to mind. And when it comes to memory care, there’s even more factors to consider, such as quality of treatment and security features.

As a senior living community providing specialized memory care services, Yorkshire Village offers residents not only a safe environment, but a beautiful and spacious setting as well. In this article, we explore some of the elements that make up our senior living community.

Beautiful and comfortable

Yorkshire Village can be found on a beautiful and rural six-acre property located north of San Diego and east of Los Angeles. We chose a remote location to ensure a quiet and private senior living experience for all of our residents, including those in our memory care program. As a memory care provider, Yorkshire Village understands the importance of providing soothing and comfortable spaces for those experiencing dementia, who often deal with confusion, anxiety, and anger. That’s why our community is designed to nurture feelings of tranquility and contentment.

Fresh air and exposure to nature is a necessity that often gets overlooked in senior living communities, especially in memory care, which requires a more secured environment. However, with access to immaculately landscaped and gated outdoor areas, residents at Yorkshire Village have ample opportunities to safely enjoy the sunshine, flowers, fresh air, and stunning views. Outdoor sitting areas provide a comfortable and peaceful setting to visit with family and friends, as well as a secure place to relax and enjoy the mountain backdrop.

Having regular opportunities to spend time outdoors is not only beneficial for mental health, but for physical health as well. The availability of gorgeous and secured outdoor spaces makes exercise more enjoyable and accessible for residents. Our grounds have even incorporated a beautiful nature trail that winds through the picturesque and serene grounds.

Unique amenities

Yorkshire’s senior living community is designed to embody a homey and quaint village atmosphere, with a variety of pleasant amenities for residents to enjoy, including a beauty salon and barber shop. Among the more unique offerings are an old-fashioned Ice Cream Shoppe and General Store, complete with genuine retro décor. This is a thoughtful and interesting way to evoke memories and feelings of familiarity, and encourages residents to connect with their life histories.

More than just a fun blast from the past, experiences such as that offered by the Ice Cream Shoppe at Yorkshire Village are similar to innovative memory care techniques that stimulate the memory via the senses, known as reminiscence therapy. Nostalgia can be a powerful tool in memory care, which is why many memory care facilities have been integrating it into their spaces with props or simulations from earlier eras.

Every day in our senior living community is active and engaging thanks to our amenities and our well-trained and compassionate staff. Aside from the nostalgic experience offered through our Ice Cream Shoppe and General Store, our other amenities include three home-style meals a day; pet, music, and art therapy; plant potting classes and baking classes; and regular movie nights.
